Restrictions for vulnerable residents in Steinfort have been lifted after water analyses returned negative for Legionella bacteria, the Luxembourg Health Directorate announced.

The commune was informed that the bacteria, which can cause a severe form of pneumonia, are no longer present. The Health Directorate has deactivated its hotline, and the administration shared the update via social media.

A week and a half ago, seven cases of Legionnaires' disease were confirmed in Steinfort, including three among elderly patients at the Intercommunal Hospital.

The hospital immediately alerted the Health Inspectorate and introduced reinforced safety measures, including water sampling, preventative treatment, and stricter disinfection. All affected patients were monitored, even those without symptoms. The Health Inspectorate confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria and launched an investigation to identify the source.

At the time, drinking tap water remained safe, but vulnerable people were advised to avoid showers, jacuzzis, and humidifiers due to the risk of inhaling contaminated droplets. Legionnaires' disease is not transmissible between humans.
