The Luxembourg Health Inspectorate has confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria – which can lead to a severe form of pneumonia – in the area of Steinfort.
In a press release issued on Friday afternoon, the health inspection confirmed seven cases of Legionnaire's disease, three of which were detected among senior patients of Steinfort hospital.
So far, there are no traces explaining the origin of the bacterial infections. Analyses are underway, although the results can take up to two weeks to finalise.
No danger persists when drinking tap water. However, vulnerable people can catch the bacteria while breathing in small droplets of water, which is why they are advised to refrain from showering, using jacuzzis, or using humidifiers running on tap water.
Legionnaires' disease cannot be transmitted between humans.
