After a raccoon was captured mid-May in a house in Tuntange, the firefighters shared some impressions of their intervention.
Although a raccoon looks cute at first sight, it is deceiving. Raccoons are considered an invasive and harmful species in Europe. Several days ago, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps was called due to the presence of one in Tuntange.
The animal had "installed itself comfortably in a house", reports CGDIS. "Refusing to leave on its own accord, the animal had to be captured with a special pole before it was released into nature safe and soundly."
This last point is important because the raccoon, originally from the Americas, has been present in Europe for a century and has been observed in Luxembourg since 1977. Its eradication is even ‘recommended’ by the Council of Europe because of its impact on the local fauna.
In 2024, the government authorities pointed out that raccoons can carry roundworm, an intestinal parasite. This has already been detected in specimens in Luxembourg and can easily be transmitted to domestic animals such as cats and dogs.
