Military exercisesLuxembourg army tests mobile satellite comms across nation

RTL Today
Luxembourg's armed forces are conducting nationwide exercises this week to test advanced mobile communication systems capable of establishing satellite internet in any terrain, including emergency scenarios.

This week, Luxembourg’s military is deploying two teams across the Grand Duchy for specialised training exercises with mobile antenna systems. RTL observed one such exercise on Tuesday morning, focusing on the rapid deployment and configuration of these communication units.

The training centres focus on establishing satellite internet connections through ground-based antenna systems, a capability that remains functional even in remote or emergency situations.

A participating lieutenant explained the exercise emphasises “deployment and lineup procedures” – the swift setup of antennae and connection to satellites to provide internet and data services.

The system serves both civilian and military applications, with previous operational use in Mali and current deployment in Romania, where Luxembourg maintains military involvement.

Strategic training approach

The army intentionally selected diverse locations throughout Luxembourg for the exercises. This approach challenges personnel to operate in unfamiliar terrain, enhancing strategic adaptability and situational awareness.

The combination of mobile antennae with Luxembourg’s GOVSAT satellite enables the military to establish internet connectivity anywhere in the world. These exercises demonstrate the army’s advanced technological standards and its ability to adapt flexibly to various challenges of international deployments. In the current geopolitical environment, the Luxembourg military continues to prioritise communication systems as one of its key strategic strengths.
