Luxembourg's national railway company CFL is expanding its infrastructure in 2025 to accommodate a growing number of passengers, following a 10% rise in train usage over the past year.

In 2024, approximately 31.3 million people used trains in Luxembourg, reflecting a 122% increase over the last 20 years, according to Marc Wengler, general manager of national railway company CFL.

In light of the growing popularity, the railway company last Thursday presented infrastructure projects along four main objectives for 2025: increasing capacity with four new trains, enhancing quality for customers – especially regarding punctuality – improving safety, and guaranteeing customer services.

Regarding the main works for the year, CFL's infrastructure management director Marc Hoffmann explained there will be work on the "entire Luxembourg-Bettembourg axis", particularly during the Easter and summer holidays.

"The main project is the newly-built Bettembourg line that tackles the congestion issues that plague passengers between Luxembourg and Bettembourg. The idea is to construct an entirely new line that separates traffic from France, Metz, Thionville, but also Paris (TGV) from other trains", he added.

Another major initiative in 2025 will be the removal of the level crossing in Dudelange, set to begin in a few weeks' time with scheduled completion in 2027. The crossing will be entirely closed from 7 July to remove all traffic from the tracks and ensure car safety.

Hoffman continued by explaining that "traffic will be diverted via the new Echternach road, as originally planned". This change will also allow for a more user-friendly redevelopment of the station area.

In addition to these two major projects, CFL plans to renew 38 kilometres of track and modernise several stations this year, including those in Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, and Mersch. The ultimate aim is to ensure punctual and sustainable mobility.
