The commune said an assessment of the damage is currently underway and that those affected will be contacted once the extent of the damage has been established, stating that it "condemns these acts of vandalism in the strongest terms".

Bettembourg mayor Jean-Marie Jans told RTL 67 graves had been damaged, and the perpetrators had even accessed the crypt. He confirmed that among the items stolen were crosses and bronze figurines of Jesus, leading to speculation the items had been stolen for their metal value.

A police complaint has since been filed, and an investigation has been opened. The commune added that it remains in close contact with the authorities and will take all necessary measures to restore the affected areas.
