Luxembourg experienced a standout year for tourism in 2024, recording the largest increase in nights spent at tourist accommodations among EU countries. According to a preliminary Eurostat report, the Grand Duchy saw a 22% growth compared to 2023, underscoring its rising appeal to both international and domestic travellers.
Malta (+13%) and Latvia (+7%) came in second and third, respectively. France and Belgium, two of Luxembourg’s neighbouring countries, were less fortunate and saw modest decreases of -1% each.
Across the European Union, tourism overall kept on bouncing back from the pandemic and surging to new heights, with a record-breaking 2.99 billion nights spent at accommodation establishments. 2024 tourism figures thus exceeded those of the previous year by 53.4 million, or 2%. While much of the EU’s growth was attributed to an increase in international guests, Luxembourg’s robust performance outpaced that of all other member states.
Hotels and similar accommodations accounted for the majority of stays across the EU, comprising 63% of all recorded nights. Holiday dwellings and short-stay accommodations followed with 24%, and campsites made up the remaining 13%. Luxembourg’s exact breakdown aligns with the EU-wide trend, further highlighting its diversified appeal to travellers.
