As heatwaves become more and more frequent, not to mention the longer duration, it is high time to learn the necessary lessons from the last heatwave and adapt measures accordingly, the Greens said at a press briefing on Thursday.

The opposition party presented a 5-point action plan with short-term and long-term measures in order to efficiently address heatwaves and help to protect people from negative consequences of prolonged high temperatures.

Among other solutions, the Greens suggest more subsidies for municipalities and private individuals, to encourage planting more vegetation as well as opening public spaces and gardens.

An investment programme should also include more heat protection measures for public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.

All the measures should be laid down in a national heat protection plan: This way, public actors and private individuals would know in advance which protective measures should apply at which temperatures.
