With the end-of-year holidays approaching, burglary rates have increased across the Grand Duchy. The police have mobilised and are fighting these - successfully.

On Friday around 2.50 am, an attempt was made to break into a single-family home in rue St Desert in Manternach. A search for the culprit ensued and two suspects were identified.

First investigations permitted to establish a link between the attempted burglary and a theft committed in a vehicle parked in rue de Syrdall. During the body check, a stolen credit card, drugs, a knife, and cash were found on the suspects.

They were immediately arrested on the orders of the public prosecutor's office and brought before the examining magistrate on the afternoon of 19 December 2024. He issued an arrest warrant for the two men.

In general, the police "has noticed an increase in burglaries in Luxembourg these past few weeks, notably the target being single family houses". In response, several police units have been mobilised to carry out a series of major police operations.

And this with success, since the beginning of November, the police have been able to arrest "around twenty people suspected of having committed burglaries or attempted burglaries," with a dozen suspects "arrested by order of the public prosecutor." Since the beginning of September, around thirty burglars have been arrested.

For instance, a suspect was recently arrested in Echternach on 9 December following the theft of three tractors. Another suspect was arrested after an attempted break-in on 7 December at a detached house in Filsdorf.

Two other suspects were identified in Altwies thanks to the discovery of burglary tools during a car check and, in the course of the investigation, suspicions were confirmed that both were linked to an earlier burglary in Erpeldingen. In this case too, the public prosecutor ordered the arrest of the two suspects.
