The question of social media access for minors has reached Luxembourg's political agenda, as the government looks to contribute to European-level discussions on the issue.
The Luxembourg government has expressed openness to the development of a European-level position on social media access for minors.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden made the statement in response to a question from MP Liz Braz of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) during a Q&A session at the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday afternoon.
Braz referenced recent international developments, including Australia's new law prohibiting social media use for individuals under the age of 16 and French President Emmanuel Macron's call for a broader European discussion on the topic.
Frieden emphasised that Luxembourg is willing to contribute constructively to such debates but does not yet have a fixed position on the matter. He noted that requiring parental consent for social media access up to age 16 seems "reasonable" to him personally but acknowledged that further discussions within the government are needed to address the issue comprehensively.
