The Minister of Interior, Léon Gloden, stated in a press release that journalists criticised an outdated draft bill from the previous government.

Indeed, as the coalition agreement stipulates, the Ministry of Interior is currently working on a draft bill that defines the right of assembly and conditions under which public protests can take place.

However, the Tageblatt sharply criticised the draft bill on Monday for being a problematic text that leaves too much room for interpretation. The journalists called it a law-and-order policy that puts pressure on the freedom of assembly, seeking to enforce restrictions in the name of order.

Minister Gloden rejected the criticisms, stating that the Tageblatt was referring to a draft law that had been drawn up by the former Minister of Police, Henri Kox, and that the current Ministry has been working on an entirely new text. He contextualised the bill by adding that the draft incorporated a parliamentary motion from 2021 that demanded protests be revised after the Covid demonstrations in the Grand Duchy.
