The recent Bluetongue disease outbreak continues to affect animals and businesses in Luxembourg, with the total number of infected animals now reaching 1,193 across 445 businesses.

This Wednesday, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) stated that 132 more new infections had been reported in the previous seven days. In addition, it was discovered that 13 more businesses were affected.

This brings the total number of infected animals in the Grand Duchy to 1,193, including 1,042 cattle, 141 sheep, 8 goats, and 2 alpacas.

The ALVA also shared that the administration noticed an increased mortality rate among cattle and sheep in August of this year compared to 2023. Livestock owners who have noticed an unusually high mortality rate among their animals are urged to fill out this form provided by ALVA.

In comparison to the last week of September (23 to 29 September), the mortality rate for sheep slightly increased in the week of September 30 to October 6. However, throughout that time, the death rate for cows dropped by 25%.

The ALVA also reminded livestock owners and businesses that vaccines against the disease are still available. Out of a total of 240,000 doses, around 95,750 have been distributed to veterinarians thus far.
