Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa have announced their move to their Fischbach residency allowing their son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and his family to take over Berg Castle in Colmar-Berg and assume the lieutenancy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
After serving as Grand Duke for over 25 years, Grand-Duke Henri made the decision to abdicate and pass the role on to his eldest son. This transition marks a significant moment for the Luxembourgish monarchy, as Prince Guillaume is set to become the next Grand Duke, continuing the long-standing dynastic tradition.
It signals a new chapter for Grand-Duke Henri and Duchess Maria Teresa, who will leave behind the official residence. Fischbach Castle, located in a picturesque part of Luxembourg, has historical ties to the royal family and will serve as their new home after decades spent at Berg Castle.
Fischbach Castle is currently inhabited by Prince Guillaume and his family but they will swap once he assumes the role of Grand-Duke. The prince announced plans for a privately funded annexe to Berg Castle in July, aiming to provide an intimate home for his family as he prepares to assume the role of Grand Duke, with widespread support from local officials and residents in Colmar-Berg in July.
According to Mandy Arendt, Mayor of Colmar-Berg, Prince Guillaume and his family have expressed a strong desire to live close to their relatives. She added, "Prince Guillaume is enthusiastic about potentially opening parts of the castle to the public, akin to the palace in the city center palace. This could be a significant advantage for such a small municipality like Colmar-Berg, as currently, the castle is, for example, open to invited guests only."
