Shortly after future Grand Duke Guillaume has unveiled plans to build a new family residence at Berg Castle, officials from Colmar-Berg and related partners have provided updates to the construction plans.

Future Grand Duke Guillaume has announced plans for a new family residence at Berg Castle. This week, the Mayor of Colmar-Berg and relevant officials updated the public on changes to the zoning plans and the procedure involved.

Building an extension on the castle grounds in Colmar-Berg requires adherence to specific zoning regulations. Lex Faber, Associate Manager of the construction company handling the project, explained that changes to the zoning plans—namely the PAP (Plan d’Aménagement Particulier) and PAG (Plan d’Aménagement Général)—follow a standardised process.

He noted, “The gardens are specifically addressed in the PAG. Within these gardens, a designated area has been identified for the new residence. The process involved evaluating the suitability of this location, ensuring it integrates well with the heritage of the site, and determining the construction approach.”

According to Mandy Arendt, Mayor of Colmar-Berg, Prince Guillaume and his family have expressed a strong desire to live close to their relatives. She added, "Since the project began, we have maintained close communication with the grand-ducal family. Prince Guillaume is enthusiastic about potentially opening parts of the castle to the public, akin to the palace in the city center palace. This could be a significant advantage for such a small municipality like Colmar-Berg, as currently, the castle is, for example, open to invited guests only."

Reactions from residents have been largely positive, with few complaints reported. Residents have until 19 August to submit any objections to the municipal council.
