The small church in Wormeldange struggled to accommodate the crowd: over 500 people attended the service, both inside and outside, where a screen was set up.
The ceremony was accompanied by musical performances and a choir. Throughout the service, various speakers took the opportunity to honour Hengel, remembering him not just as a politician, but as a friend, colleague, and beloved family member.
Hengel was fondly remembered for his helpfulness, dedication, fairness, and optimism. Many highlighted how he uniquely embodied the spirit of the Moselle region, leaving a lasting mark on the community he served.
The service was also attended by several national political figures, including Claude Wiseler, who paid tribute to his colleague and friend, commending Hengel for always sharing his honest opinions with the intention of helping others.
Following the service, attendees were invited to the Wormeldange Cultural Centre, where they continued to celebrate Hengel’s life over drinks. Max Hengel was 47 years old.
