The working group “Feux de végétation et de forêt” (Vegetation and Forest Fires), part of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, has issued essential guidance to the public on how to prevent forest fires amid the ongoing heatwave.

A carelessly discarded cigarette butt, still-hot embers, or even the heat from a vehicle parked on dry grass can be enough to start a fire. Authorities are therefore urging people not to discard cigarette butts, to avoid all outdoor fires, and to limit barbecues to designated areas, with a fire extinguisher readily available. Embers must be completely cooled before being removed.

It is also crucial not to block forest roads, which are essential for emergency services, and not to drive through meadows or fields. Municipalities and farmers are urged to keep their water tanks ready for use to support any potential interventions.

In case of a fire, the advice is to immediately dial 112, and indicate the precise location and access points to allow firefighters to arrive quickly.
