Luxembourg's official retirement age is 65, however, many people find themselves disoriented once their working years are over. This is where Gero, a competence centre for aging, comes in handy.

For the past 35 years, Gero was located in a converted monastery in Itzig, a location that, while charming, also presented certain challenges, as noted by Alain Brever. In mid-September, the centre will relocate to a new address in Bonnevoie.

The so-called aging competence centre provides valuable support for individuals navigating the third stage of their lives, along with information for professionals looking to work in the sector.

Gero operates across three main areas entitled Active, Pro, and Research. 'Active' provides guidance for individuals who are already retired or approaching retirement, with practical information given in the form of training sessions, events, and brochures. Gero hopes, through these means, to foster continued engagement and awareness during this particular stage of life.

The other two areas also focus on aging, but with a different target audience, with 'Pro' focusing on professionals working with retired individuals, and 'Research' contributing to studies and age-related research.

The three services are also bolstered by the Ministry of Family Affairs, which provides access to retirement coaches that in turn can help retirees explore their options, whether it's organising their lives, resting, or travelling. Director Alain Brever stresses that, in order to make the most of retirement, preparation is an essential first step.
