Green Party MPs Joëlle Welfring and Meris Šehović recently raised the question of whether Luxembourg's two state weather services should be merged to improve communication, particularly during crises.
In her response, Minister for Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes expressed opposition to the proposal, confirming that the two services, AgriMeteo with its 37 weather stations and Meteolux, will remain independent.
Minister Backes acknowledged that discussions about creating a single national meteorological institution have been ongoing since 2018 but have not resulted in any concrete action.
She also emphasised that publications by privately owned weather stations or independent meteorological experts should not be considered part of official state communication.
The Minister highlighted the LU-Alert project as an example of how weather warning communication could be more effectively harmonised.
