BODIES FOUND – The Grand Ducal police reported the discovery of two bodies in a garage in Bertrange on Sunday. The authorities were alerted to a potential fire at the property at around 7.40am. Officers responding to the call found the two badly burned bodies at the scene. The garage is located at the site of a former business on Rue de l'industrie, but the property is thought to no longer be in use. The public prosecutor's office has ordered an investigation. Further details were not available at the time of writing.
FUEL MADNESS – Unlike in neighbouring Germany and France, where differentiated pricing is more common, Luxembourg's service stations tend to charge the same across the country. Over the weekend, however, one operator in Foetz broke with that pattern, cutting the prices of both diesel and petrol as part of a limited promotion. A litre of 95-octane petrol was offered at €1.599 instead of the standard €1.837, a reduction of 23.8 cents. A litre of 98-octane was sold at €1.869 instead of €2.049, a reduction of 18 cents. Diesel, likewise, was priced at €1.869 rather than €2.057, a reduction of 18.8 cents. The discount was particularly notable on 95-octane petrol. Filling up a 50-litre tank amounts to savings of around €11.90.
'VOLLEKSLAF' – Around 4,000 participants registered for the 50th edition of the Walfer Vollekslaf, including 1,300 students for the Marc Savic Challenge, which is growing year by year, and 1,200 registrations for the children's run. A celebrity run was organised for the special anniversary, led by Sports Minister Martine Hansen and Interior Minister Léon Gloden. Michel Knepper, who was designated as Walfy this year, was also present and finished just behind Minister Gloden and not too far ahead of the Sports Minister.
ZIONISM DECISION – The UK's left-wing Green party voted Sunday to define Zionism as racism at the party's annual conference, drawing sharp backlash from three British Jewish groups, the ruling Labour Party and Israel's government. Members of the Green party, which has five MPs in Britain's 650-seat parliament and which enjoyed a boost in recent local and special elections, backed the motion at the party's conference, with 1,022 votes in favour and 813 against.
IRAN US – Iran's top diplomat insisted on Sunday that there would be no military solution to the United States' war against the Islamic republic, with talks on ending the conflict apparently at an impasse. A campaign of heavy bombardment failed to bring a decisive close to the war launched by the US and Israel in late February, and Washington in recent weeks has dialled back military operations in favour of economic pressure.
EU CHINA TRADE – EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic will head to Beijing on Thursday for two days of make-or-break meetings with Chinese officials to try to stave off a trade war. The European Union has toughened its stance towards Beijing to defend businesses against what it believes is unfair competition in critical sectors including cars. Increasingly European leaders and observers warn of a "China Shock 2.0", used to describe Chinese firms' shift into more high-tech manufacturing, which is threatening many traditional EU industries.
PORTUGAL THROUGH – Portugal defeated Norway 2-1 without their superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday to qualify for the Nations League quarter-finals. Goncalo Ramos secured a comeback victory for Jorge Jesus's Portugal in the Group A4 clash after Joao Cancelo's rocket levelled Kristoffer Ajer's stunning opener for Norway.
WOMENS GOLF – Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul bagged her fourth title of the year with a three-shot victory at the LPGA Tour's Lotte Championship in Hawaii on Sunday. The world number two carded six birdies in a four-under-par 68 to finish on 21 under par at Hoakalei Country Club on Oahu.
BRAVES LEVEL – The Atlanta Braves shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers' star-studded batting line-up to score a series-leveling 3-2 victory in Major League Baseball's playoffs on Sunday as the Milwaukee Brewers snatched a dramatic walk-off win to defeat the San Diego Padres. A superb collective Braves pitching performance set up a vital win at Dodger Stadium that leaves the best-of-five National League division series finely balanced at 1-1 ahead of game three in Atlanta on Tuesday.
It’s a bit of a chilly start again, with temperatures as low as 8 degrees overnight. There will be some clouds around with the sunrise, but these should clear fairly quickly and we will have a bright, sunny day with a top temperature of 23 celsius.
