The Ministry of Mobility has reported an increase in incidents of aggression and vandalism on Luxembourg's buses and trains in 2023.

While the number of these incidents has risen, the Ministry notes that this increase should be considered in the context of a growing number of passengers using public transport since the pandemic. Specific figures were not provided by the government.

Despite a rise in reported acts of aggression, the Ministry indicates that the severity of these incidents has not worsened compared to previous years. This observation was highlighted during the first meeting of the committee responsible for public transport safety, held on Thursday.

To address these issues, the committee is leveraging digitalised surveillance cameras — installed on trains by the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) over the past year. These cameras are expected to enhance the ability to report and address incidents of aggression effectively. The surveillance system will soon be expanded to include trams and buses on the RGTR, TICE, and Luxembourg City lines, aiming to better monitor sensitive areas at stations and bus stops.

In a positive development, the Safety Committee, chaired by Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes, also announced that nearly half of the 1,300 buses operating on the 190 RGTR lines are now equipped with safety cabins for drivers.
