Arthur Welter and Cargolux, two of Luxembourg's largest companies in the transport sector, aim to gain experience with new options as they test out hydrogen lorries on Luxembourg's roads.
Borrowing the idea from Cargolux, Arthur Welter has leased a hydrogen truck for two years, which will soon be deployed on a fixed route. The project seeks to gain experience with hydrogen-powered modes of transport, which is easier to test out by road than by air.
The lorry will make a round trip from Findel's cargo-centre to its Frankfurt counterpart five times a week. The vehicle can cover up to 400 kilometres and has been partly converted for air freight. To the company's knowledge, such a hydrogen vehicle is not used for these purposes anywhere else in the world.
Achieving zero emissions in the transport sector is possible, but currently not considered to be profitable. For Arthur Welter and Cargolux, this endeavour aims to perform "pioneering work and gain experience in order to prepare for new technologies".
The Grand Duchy itself has a clear hydrogen strategy. Last month, Luxembourg presented the Hydrogen Valley project, which aims to produce green hydrogen in Käerjeng from 2026 onwards.
