Shortly before the holidays, most people are out and about in the country’s shopping streets, picking up their last gifts. However, people carrying very, very large bags are becoming an increasingly rare sight.
“This year there is a lot of Secret Santa gifting, including among colleagues. Many small gifts are being bought, but perfumes and small accessories are also on trend. In the electronics sector, wireless headphones or air fryers are also popular gifts,” explains Enza Fuzio, a member of Luxembourg City Traders’ Association.
For some, the gifts have long since been bought and are already wrapped under the tree, though a few last parcels still need to be picked up. Online orders also have an impact on shops, as customer habits have changed in recent years.
“The beginning of the month is always relatively quiet, but when it gets close to the holidays and delivery times become too tight, people then come into the shops in large numbers,” says Christophe Ayroles, manager of a shop.
Habits are not only changing when it comes to gifts. There are also new trends when it comes to the festive menu.
“Turkey remains a favourite, but people want to sit at the table for longer, which is why menus like raclette are becoming increasingly popular,” emphasises Fabrice Brisson, manager of a supermarket.
Once people have made it through the crowds in the shops, it is time to head home quickly to prepare the food and gifts, and to enjoy the festive season.
