Traffic managementEchternach has up to 20,000 cars passing through daily

Echternach, near the German border, faces daily traffic congestion, prompting several infrastructure projects to be carried out, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2025.

Echternach is close to the German border; every day, many cross-border commuters use the two bridges over the Sauer River to come to work in Luxembourg.

Both the Lëtzebuerger Strooss and the N10 are frequently used for travel and commuting, often leading to traffic congestion. The number of cars taking this road can sometimes reach 20.000.

To help manage this traffic, several projects are underway, including the Liaison Morgenstern, the Knepper Bypass, and on the old railway line from Luxembourg to Echternach, commonly referred to as Charly. Currently, construction is focused on the Liaison Morgenstern, which began in 2024.

This project is expected to be completed by early 2025, with the new road set to open to traffic while addressing the hazardous 90-degree turn at the same time. The total cost of this project is €14 million, a sum jointly funded by the city of Echternach and the National Roads Administration.

Additionally, the municipality has other plans in the works, such as developing a Shared Space around the Market Square.
