The State's existing contract with the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) for passenger transportation via train and bus was signed in 2009 for a 15-year term, set to conclude by the end of 2024.

As the contract nears expiration, a new legislative proposal has been set forth. Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes introduced a bill to the Parliamentary Mobility Committee on Thursday, focusing solely on the bus segment of CFL services. This separation from train operations follows a legal framework adjustment.

The proposed project spans from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2035, with a designated budget of €692 million. Currently, CFL oversees the operations of ten bus routes.

Addressing enquiries about the comparatively higher cost per kilometre for CFL buses in contrast to those operated by private companies under RGTR contracts, Minister Backes attributed the variance to remuneration expenses for CFL employees.

Furthermore, Minister Backes clarified that the government has no intentions to initiate reforms regarding the salary progression of CFL personnel.
