This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo 916 Spider car, and to commemorate the occasion, a group of car enthusiasts from across Europe, including Luxembourg, are embarking on a journey to Italy.
On 2 May, an official event is scheduled at the Alfa Romeo museum just outside Milan, followed by an even larger gathering in Padua, Italy on Saturday, 4 May. But before reaching these destinations, the group will make a few stops along the way, convening in Luxembourg on Monday.
William Fagan, a proud owner of a convertible Spider 916, shared his excitement with RTL Today about the upcoming event and how he became part of this small but vibrant community.
William's passion for cars led him to search for a fun yet affordable Italian car four years ago, perfect for trips with his Italian wife. "A lot of the maintenance you can do yourself if you have some mechanic knowledge," William notes.
The yellow car was a gift for his wife, serving as a reminder of sunshine during grey Luxembourg weather. Initially, she wasn't thrilled to find a yellow car in the driveway on Christmas in 2020, but soon they found themselves embraced by a friendly community.
After purchasing the car, William sought out Facebook groups for advice and quickly found himself welcomed into a community of like-minded individuals. "It's a very normal group of people, everyday people," he remarks.
With only 2,000 of these 'Zoe Yellow' cars ever made, William mentioned how his initial intention was to purchase a different model, but was captivated by the convertible at first sight.
This is William's second trip with the other Alfa Romeo cars. Last year, William and his wife participated in a trip to Zandvoort, Netherlands, specifically to and on the Formula 1 racetrack.
This year he will join the convoy on Monday as they pass through Luxembourg, he explains. Autopolis graciously agreed to host their cars at 3pm on Monday afternoon. He asked the city but since they renovated the Place Guillaume II no cars are allowed anymore. Abbaye de Neumünster was excited about the event but had prior engagements.
William and his wife will then accompany the convoy to Saarbrücken, passing through Switzerland on their way to Turin, where another small reception is planned. The car's designer, Enrico Fumia, resides near Turin, and although aware of the meeting, his attendance remains unconfirmed.
As the convoy makes its way from Turin to Milan, anticipation builds as more car enthusiasts from Germany and Austria are expected to join. For William, this leg of the journey marks his final stop before returning to the Grand Duchy, unfortunately causing him to miss the grand event in Padua.
Nevertheless, William's excitement for the trip remains high. "Everyone is making last-minute fixes on their cars currently," he shares with enthusiasm.
So, on Monday, keep your eyes peeled. If you happen to spot around 20 yellow convertibles cruising through Luxembourg, now you know there's a reasonable explanation behind the spectacle.
