Luxembourg has claimed the top spot in Europe for access to contraceptives. This milestone follows a landmark decision in April 2023, wherein the state began fully covering the costs of many contraceptives.
According to the "Contraception Policy Atlas Europe 2024," Luxembourg tops the list among 46 countries for its comprehensive access to contraception. This represents a notable advancement from 2023 when the Grand Duchy held the fourth position with an 85.2% rating, trailing behind the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium.
Luxembourg scored 94.2% in the Atlas, surpassing contenders like the UK (94.1%) and France (93.2%). Conversely, countries like Poland (33.5%), Hungary (40%), and Armenia (40.7%) lag at the bottom of the ranking. The percentages reflect the level of information regarding access to modern and effective contraception in each country, as well as the extent of reimbursement for these products.
In Luxembourg, the National Health Fund (CNS) covers the entire cost of contraceptives such as the contraceptive pill, with no age restrictions in place. However, condoms remain excluded from this coverage.
The Luxembourg organisation "Planning Familial" has hailed this achievement as a victory in its six-decade-long advocacy for sexual autonomy and comprehensive sex education. Access to contraceptives stands as a cornerstone of their efforts to promote reproductive health and empower individuals to make informed choices about their sexual health.
