Three minors were transferred to the Luxembourg Penitentiary Centre in Schrassig after being suspected of stealing from a passenger on a bus in Gasperich, the public prosecutor’s office announced in a statement.
A witness reportedly saw an individual being robbed and immediately informed the bus driver, who then closed the vehicle doors to prevent anyone from leaving. The three girls, aged thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen, were identified as suspects. Authorities noted that all three were already known to both the police and the prosecutor’s office, and that their places of residence and legal residency status in Luxembourg remain unclear.
Due to a lack of available spots in the Unisec youth detention unit, the girls were provisionally placed in the adult prison in Schrassig. The case has now been passed to a juvenile court judge. The presumption of innocence applies.
The practice of detaining minors in adult prisons has long faced sharp criticism from children’s rights organisations in Luxembourg. These groups have repeatedly condemned the regular placement of underage detainees in the Schrassig prison due to insufficient youth facilities.
