The case concerning an accident that occurred in Esch-sur-Alzette at the end of August has been officially closed, according to confirmation from the public prosecutor's office.
The incident unfolded when a motorist lost his life after colliding with a wall during a police pursuit. The investigation into this incident was finalised in mid-October. The decision to close the case was reached due to the absence of evidence pointing to external intervention.
What happened?
On the evening of Monday, 28 August, the police received reports of an individual trespassing on private property in the Lauterbann neighbourhood in Niederkorn. Witnesses noted that the person was involved in acts of vandalism and, as reported by our colleagues at RTL.lu, was trespassing in his ex-wife's garden.
According to the initial police report, the individual in question drove his car towards the police patrol that had arrived at the scene. Upon spotting the patrol, he attempted to evade capture, leading to a high-speed pursuit on the A13 in the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette. During this chase, the driver reportedly reached speeds of approximately 180 km/h while attempting to elude the pursuing officers.
The chase came to an end at the junction of the Lankelz ring road and Boulevard Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, where the fleeing driver collided head-on with the wall of a primary school, resulting in his vehicle catching fire. At the scene, police officers made efforts to extinguish the fire. By the time emergency services arrived at the scene, the driver was already dead.
