Luxembourg

BOMMELEEER TRIAL – Eleven years after Luxembourg's original Bommeleeër bombing trial was suspended, a new trial begins today for seven former law enforcement officials accused of giving false or misleading testimony. The officers – five former gendarmes and two public security members – allegedly misled the court during proceedings to the 21 bomb attacks that terrorised Luxembourg between 1984 and 1986. The first hearing begins at 3pm, with 16 trial days scheduled.

DIEKIRCH BRIDGE – A temporary bridge over the Sûre River in Diekirch opens today after an 18-month wait. Running at 70m, it's Luxembourg's longest temporary bridge, replacing the closed 'Fisselsbrücke' and an unreliable pontoon. Renovation of the original bridge will not start until 2028, with completion expected by mid-2029.

GAZA PLAN – The UN Security Council is voting on a US resolution supporting Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan today, including deployment of an international stabilisation force. UKRAINE WARPresident Macron is hosting Ukrainian President Zelensky in Paris today for talks on continued military support, European security and the situation on the front lines in Ukraine. EPSTEIN FILES – President Trump has reversed his position and now backs releasing all Jeffrey Epstein files, telling House Republicans to vote for disclosure because "we have nothing to hide". The House is expected to vote this week on requiring the Justice Department to release all documents related to the disgraced financier, despite Trump previously opposing the measure.

CIGARETTE CONFERENCE – A major World Health Organisation conference begins in Geneva today, with representatives from 180 countries attending. Key topics include protecting young people from e-cigarettes and new nicotine products, potential bans on filtered cigarettes, and environmental pollution from cigarette waste. The WHO reports that 7 million people die annually from tobacco-related causes.

CHILE PRESIDENT – Chile's presidential election is heading to a run-off after no candidate secured a majority. Centre-left candidate Jeanette Jara received around 27% of the vote, whilst far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast gained just over 24%. The two will face each other in a decisive second round on 14 December to determine Chile's next president.
