Despite the introduction of weekend appointments and the inclusion of an additional MRI scanner in Potaschberg/Grevenmacher, waiting times for non-urgent MRI appointments in Luxembourg have shown limited improvement.

Currently, Luxembourg has twelve MRI scanners, with an additional one on the way when the Centre Hospitalier du Nord (CHdN) receives its new machine. However, the National Health Fund (CNS) remains uncertain regarding the adequacy of the MRI scanner supply. Christian Oberlé, President of the CNS, reveals that they have considered requesting an analysis of prescription patterns to ascertain that the supply aligns with genuine demand. This measure aims to ensure that the availability of MRI scanners does not inadvertently drive unjustified demand. In addition, an increasing number of non-residents now seek MRI examinations in Luxembourg, suggesting that neighbouring countries may not offer shorter waiting times.

These observations trace back to 2022, with Oberlé noting that it is reasonable for insured individuals living abroad to opt for MRI examinations in Luxembourg. However, the CNS President emphasises the importance of a contemporary impact analysis. Additionally, it has been observed that fewer Luxembourg residents are seeking MRI examinations abroad. To optimise MRI scanner utilisation, the CNS envisions a centralised platform that consolidates appointment bookings across all hospitals. Such a platform would provide a comprehensive overview and facilitate thorough analysis, potentially even enabling hospitals to reduce weekend MRI time slots again.

However, the realisation of a national, centralised appointment platform for MRI scans, mammograms, or other medical tests is still a long way off, as noted by the Federation of Luxembourg Hospitals (FHL). In fact, some hospitals have yet to implement internal centralised appointment systems for their own use.
