In the midst of Luxembourg's national elections set for 8 October, residents of Beaufort and Berdorf will also be casting ballots for municipal representatives, in elections complicated by a candidate's death in Berdorf and a registration controversy in Beaufort.
Although most of the country will take to the polls on 8 October to vote in the national election, there are two towns in Luxembourg where residents will also cast their ballots for municipal representation.
While the municipal elections in Berdorf were postponed due to the death of a candidate, those in Beaufort have to be redone as it turned out that one of the candidates was not actually registered in the town.
Beaufort
Two complete lists with eleven candidates each will compete on 8 October. One, entitled 'Your People', is lead by incumbent Mayor Camille Hoffmann and received seven seats on the local council in the June election. The 'Citizens List' won four seats at the time.
The administrative court cancelled the election results when it came out that Dario Ballanti of the Citizens List was not officially registered in Beaufort. While he will not run in the October election, the Citizens' List has managed to add four new candidates.
In conversation with RTL, spokesperson Bruno Domingues acknowledged the advantage of having eleven instead of eight candidates running as this will give them additional votes from people who vote for the entire list.
The list is made up of three men and eight women, none of whom is running as a lead candidate. Domingues and Annemie Loor act as coordinators for the list.
In terms of policies, the Citizens List wants to increase transparency, pay closer attention to citizens, and invest more into sports and youth.
Mayor Hoffmann does not see the Citizens List as a threat, even if they now have three additional candidates. According to Hoffmann, locals are "slightly annoyed" that they have to vote again and have little understanding for why Ballanti had not been removed as a candidate in due time.
The Mayor's team intends to focus on continuity in the coming years. Important projects include an expansion of the local pre-school, a renovation of the Dillingen water network, and a conversion of the old distillery into a multifunctional space with bar and restaurant. Furthermore, social housing is to be constructed in Beaufort.
Berdorf
Meanwhile in Berdorf, 15 candidates will compete for nine council spots on 8 October. With the exception of deceased Carlo Bentner, the same people that were registered to run in June will run again.
