Councillor Carlo Bentner passed away at the age of 70 last weekend. The death of a candidate means that the municipal elections in Berdorf now have to be postponed, according to law.
Article 203 of the election law stipulates that in the event a candidate running for office in a town with relative majority system passes away, elections must be postponed. This mainly affects municipalities that fall short of 3,000 residents.
Bentner was one of 16 candidates running for office in Berdorf. He had been active in local politics for 18 years and had been part of the municipal council since 2005.
A statement on the website of the Berdorf municipality notes the following: "The community of Berdorf has the sad duty of announcing the death of its local councillor Carlo Bentner last weekend. After a short but relentless illness, he was able to join his wife Tiny, who had already left us last year. As a member of the Berdorf municipal council since 2005, Carlo was always committed to a better quality of life in our community. We wish Carlo's family well and send them our sincere condolences on behalf of all the citizens of Berdorf."
