More than 2,500 people are said to work for online service platforms in Luxembourg.
At a press conference, the Left Party (déi Lénk) criticised the situation of these platform workers, who work for delivery services, for example.
The main issue with this type of work, according to the Left Party, is that these workers are classified as self-employed. As a result, they have "lower incomes, precarious working conditions, and inadequate social security."
In 2022, Left Party MPs tabled a bill drafted by the Chamber of Employees to guarantee better worker protection.
The bill specifies numerous factors for determining whether someone is an employee or self-employed. If one of these conditions is met, the person should be regarded as an employee.
To date, neither the government nor the Council of State have approved the law. The Left Party believes that the government is waiting for a directive from Brussels.
