Luxembourg's wind turbines produced 314 gigawatt hours of electricity in 2021. However, there is still much potential for additional capacity throughout the country.
Luxembourg wants to use more renewable energy in the future, and wind power is to play a more important role alongside solar energy. Currently, there are 62 wind turbines in Luxembourg, with 17 currently awaiting approval.
However, there is much to be done - especially given that 10 percent less electricity was produced in 2021 than in 2020 due to, among other things, bad weather conditions and old plants that had to be taken out of operation. Nevertheless, wind energy ranks first among renewable energies in Luxembourg. In terms of total national electricity consumption, which was 6,549 gigawatt hours in 2021, wind energy covered just under 5 percent.
Industry is responsible for 58% of the Grand Duchy's energy consumption, with trade at 26% and households at only 16%.
The National Climate and Energy Plan 2040 envisages that about 1,100 gigawatt hours of electricity could be produced by wind turbines by 2040. The targets for solar energy are also considered to be particularly realistic because the state wants to rely on so-called repowering. This means that existing plants are replaced by more efficient plants and thus the electricity production is massively increased without necessarily having to install many more plants. One new turbine produces as much as 18 twenty-year-old models put together.
At the moment, three new wind parks are under construction in Dahlem, in Arenztal and in Sudwand to bring in wind turbines that produce up to 21 megawatts. However, the projects were subjected to delays due to concerns raised by nature conservation projects on the endangerment of the black stork and red kite habitats. At the same time, regular events are organised to keep the inhabitants informed on any advances and future goals and ensure transparency between all parties affected by the project.
