Police in Luxembourg dealt with multiple alcohol-related incidents on Friday night, including aggressive behaviour in bars and hospitals as well as several drink-driving cases that led to arrests and licence suspensions.
The first call came around 5.30pm in a bar on Rue Dicks in Esch, where an intoxicated customer became aggressive and started arguing with a waiter. The situation escalated into a physical altercation. As the individual was heavily intoxicated and posed a danger to themselves and others, the police took them to a sobering-up cell after a medical check-up.
At around 9pm, officers were called to the Redange-sur-Attert station, where another intoxicated man was seen walking across the railway tracks. Upon arrival, the man became aggressive towards the police and refused to calm down. He too was taken into protective custody after being evaluated by a doctor.
The night was also eventful for staff at the Emile Mayrisch Hospital Centre (CHEM) in Esch, who twice had to call for police assistance due to disruptive intoxicated patients: once around 9.30pm on Friday and again at 5am on Saturday morning. In both cases, the individuals were removed from the hospital and placed in the sobering-up cell.
Alcohol-related road incidents
Friday also saw a number of drunk drivers on Luxembourg's roads, with several incidents ending badly.
Around 8.30pm in Vianden's Montée du Château, a car crashed into a lamppost. The driver tested positive for alcohol and, after becoming aggressive towards officers, was taken to the police station to sober up. His car was seized, and a report was filed.
Later that night, police stopped two more drivers: one on the A7 motorway towards Luxembourg City around 1.30am, and another on the Avenue de la Liberté around 12.30am. Both were driving erratically, failed breath tests, and had their licences confiscated on the spot.
Finally, at 5.45am, police intervened on Place de la Gare in the capital, where an intoxicated driver attempted to overtake a bus. He was stopped, and his driver's license was confiscated.
