When the mask mandate was lifted in most places in Luxembourg, many rejoiced as the face cover is known to cause discomfort. It is therefore unsurprising that most people only wear one when and where they are still required to do so.

Nevertheless, there are also some who still continue putting on a mask when leaving their homes. On social media, these individuals are often mocked or told that they are actually hurting their immune systems by fending off viruses and bacteria.

“Those who always wear a mask outside will become more sick in the future as their immune systems are weakened”, proclaims one social media user.

However, the human body is constantly exposed to bacteria and viruses. Exposure exists with and without masks, explains Dr Anne Vergison from the Health Inspection. Although masks reduce the risk of droplet infection, it does not prevent contact with viruses and bacteria, she further notes.

The immune system weakens with age and sickness, which is why it is advisable for some to wear a mask and protect themselves against an infection, says Dr Vergison: “Masks remain a protection for individuals.”

According to the health expert, there are no disadvantages in wearing a mask: “The immune system is not improving the more one is exposed, particularly when the body is already weakened.”

It should be noted that simple cloth masks are designed to protect others more than oneself, contrary to FFP2 masks, which are more proficient at filtering.
