The municipality of Luxembourg City has contributed buses to Ukraine’s educational infrastructure since early 2023 through the “School buses for Ukraine” campaign, a European Commission-led solidarity initiative. At least one former city bus is now in service transporting schoolchildren in Ukraine’s Rivne region, an area hosting many families displaced by the war.

A second bus from the municipality is also operational in Ukraine. A recent post on the Facebook page of Inna Yaremenko, Vice President of “LUkraine”, showed one of the donated buses stationed in a snowy Ukrainian locale.

According to Anne Calteux, the European Commission’s representative in Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy has provided more buses per capita to the campaign than any other participating nation.

Selected contributions from Luxembourg:

  • December 2022: Voyages Emile Weber donated eight school buses.
  • July 2023: Five buses from Luxembourg City’s public transport fleet (AVL) were sent to Ukraine, followed by nine more large buses to the Kherson region in October.
  • June 2024: The commune of Niederanven donated two minibuses.

In addition to buses, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) has supplied armoured ambulances and other equipment to war-affected areas.

The “School buses for Ukraine” campaign reached a significant milestone on 4 November 2023, when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska presented 370 collected buses to Ukrainian municipalities during a visit to Kyiv.

The initiative addresses a critical need in Ukraine, which is home to an estimated 5.7 million school-age children. To further support education, the European Commission has also provided Ukraine with 1.5 million schoolbooks.
