
A deadly incident took place at the football pitch of Jeunesse football club in Esch-sur-Alzette on Friday evening. An unknown attacker assaulted players and coaching staff with a knife, but was eventually overpowered by people at the scene. In the process, the attacker suffered severe injuries to the head. Despite being transported to hospital, the man later succumbed to his wounds, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

He was not at the scene at the time, but explained that about 26 boys and girls aged 12-13 were on the pitch at the time of the incident.
Following the attack, all present children were offered the opportunity to meet with the psychological services of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS).
Theisen stressed that the children were not in danger at any point during the events. He also said that the attack was not related to the children nor the club, however the exact circumstances still have to be determined over the course of the investigation.
