A man has died after club members overpowered him at a football ground in Esch-sur-Alzette on Friday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, an unknown man walked onto the field during a Jeunesse Esch training session and ran towards various people with a knife.

A press release from the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office stated that the man verbally and physically assaulted a number of players and coaches.

In response, the club members managed to overpower the man, who subsequently faced serious injuries to the leg and head.

After police arrived on the scene, just before 6pm on Friday evening, the man was transported to hospital and operated on.

However, the press statement states that the man died from his wounds this morning.

The police are still investigating the incident but did confirm that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the death, and will appear before a judge on Saturday.
