Representatives of the Democratic Party (DP) have been at the helm of Luxembourg City for 53 years. In this year’s municipal elections, the liberals will slightly alter their strategy and enter the race with a double leadership for a first time in history: Mayor Lydie Polfer and Alderman Patrick Goldschidt.
The Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), on the other hand, will campaign in classic conservative fashion with just one frontrunner. MP and Luxembourg City Alderman Serge Wilmes expressed his belief that it is not always easy to achieve success as the junior partner in a coalition, but showed commitment to make the CSV the dominant party in Luxembourg’s capital.
The Luxembourg City section of the Greens were the first to announce their campaign at the beginning of July 2022. MP François Benoy and municipal councillor Claudie Reyland will act as frontrunners.
The Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) not only proposes a double leadership, but also two relatively new faces: Maxime Miltgen and Gabriel Boisante. The party intends to focus its campaign on the issue of housing.
According to the parties present at the New Year’s reception, the election battle is expected to really kick off after the Easter holidays.
Election day will be 11 June 2023.
