New figures from Eurostat show that in 2021, the average household spent one in every four euros on housing and related costs.

The household consumption figures were revealed by the European statistics agency on Friday.

In addition to showing the amount spent by resident households on housing costs, which include water and energy bills, they provide a breakdown of other consumption-related activity such as food and drink, transport, clothing and so on.

After housing-related costs, most household expenditure went on food and non-alcoholic beverages (14.3%), followed by miscellaneous expenditure (12.5%) and transport (12.1%).

Leisure activities such as recreation and culture (8%), hospitality (6.6%), and clothing (4.2%) all saw comparatively less spending.

Spending was also comparatively low for education (0.9%) and health (4.7%). The figures relate to direct expenditure by households, so state-funded healthcare and schooling is not included, amongst other things.

Compared to 2020, spending on transport and hospitality saw modest increases of 4 and 6 percent, respectively. This likely reflects an increase in mobility and leisure activity following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions.

Across the EU, the top spending categories were similar to Luxembourg: housing-related costs, followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages, then miscellaneous expenditure and transport.
