Although Luxembourg City remains the most popular destination for tourists travelling to the Grand Duchy, the country's rural parts have recorded an uptick in visitors this year.
Many of Luxembourg's tourism hotspots benefitted from the elevated temperatures over the course of the summer. Not only the capital, but also the rural parts of the Grand Duchy are gaining in popularity.
According to Tom Schmit, ranger at the Upper Sûre Lake, Luxembourg's number one swimming spot once again attracted a number of foreign tourists over the summer. The solar-powered boat carried 3,500 passengers across 221 trips, thus approaching a new seasonal record.
The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) has confirmed this trend as overnight stays are also closing in on the record set in 2019. Luxembourg City, the Oesling region, and the Mullerthal are the most popular spots.
During the first half of the year, the Mullerthal trail has seen 30% more visitors than during the same period in 2021, which also drove up the number of guided tours.
Christophe Origer, president of the local tourism association, believes that more young tourists find their way to the Mullerthal than what used to be the case: "They feel more connected to nature and therefore come to the Mullerthal, as the region has numerous hiking trails."
The variety of sports that people are able to pursue in the region also helps bring more tourists to Luxembourg.
Although the rate of Luxembourgish tourists has decreased compared to the first two pandemic years, officials still believe that the holiday-at-home spirit will prevail and become an essential pillar of Luxembourgish tourism in the future.
