Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel visited Ukraine on Tuesday, his office communicated on Tuesday morning.
Bettel was invited to the country by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, the communication further stated. However, it did not disclose many details on the trip.
The Prime Minister visited "cities affected by Russian aggression", as well as attending a series of bilateral political meetings, the statement read. For reasons of security, the details of the trip were only announced during the visit.
Zelensky has been welcoming heads of state to Ukraine. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Premier Mario Draghi and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis visited the country.
On Twitter, Bettel shared pictures of his visit in which was shown speaking with residents near destroyed houses and hugging a woman in black head scarf. He travelled to Bucha, Borodyanka, Irpin and other Kyiv suburbs, which became a symbol of alleged Russian atrocities after whole residential blocks there were destroyed and hundreds of civilians were found killed following the retreat of Moscow's troops in early April.
The police chief of the Kyiv region said Tuesday that victims of the Russian attempt to seize the city continued to be found with 1,333 bodies of civilians discovered so far and 300 people still missing.
On Tuesday evening, Bettel tweeted that Luxembourg supported granting Ukraine candidate status in their bid to join the EU, and said he would defend the position at this week's European Council meeting. He called this "an important beacon of hope that the people of Ukraine deserve."
