The Health Directorate's weekly Covid review shows that novel infections increased significantly between 3 and 9 January.

After an 110% increase recorded in the previous week, infections rose again by 89%, which equalled 10,680 new cases. 12 more people have since died with or because of Covid-19.

The incidence rate increased to 1,700 new infections per 100,000 residents, roughly twice as high as the week before. The virus circulates most among people below the age of 29, an age group that an incidence rate increase of 100%.

69 patients were hospitalised with Covid-19 last week, 2 more than in the seven days prior. 49 were in regular care (out of which 27 were unvaccinated), and 20 in intensive care (out of which 13 were unvaccinated).

The vaccination campaign is gaining pace. 3,900 people received their first jab last week, while 5,400 additional people were fully vaccinated. This means that 450,400 people are now fully vaccinated, which represents 81.4% of the population.

The number of active infections has meanwhile doubled to 16,000. The average age for novel cases is 31.3 years. 3,600 people were forced to quarantine last week (+42%), while 14,500 people had to isolate following a positive test result (+79%).
