There are cases in which parents of primary school pupils have decided to homeschool their children because of the coronavirus restrictions in Luxembourg's schools.
In his reply to a parliamentary question by MP Josée Lorsché from the Green Party (Déi Gréng), Minister of Education Claude Meisch confirmed that there are "isolated cases" of parents who have decided to pull their children out of school because of the Covid-19 measures.
According to the Minister, these parents generally belong to one of two camps: They either think that the measures are too strict, or not strict enough.
In this context, Meisch specified that it is up to the regional directorates to approve or reject an application for homeschooling. Parents must comply with numerous conditions to guarantee that their children receive a similar level of education as they would in a school.
If parents cannot meet these conditions, children are automatically enrolled at their local school, the Minister stated, adding that this is meant to ensure that compulsory education is respected.
The Minister neither specified what exactly "isolated cases" means, nor how many children are homeschooled by their parents in Luxembourg.
