Just like last year, people had to show some creativity to commemorate the beginning of the new year in style.

Bars, restaurants, and clubs were forced to close their doors at 11.00 p.m., making it rather difficult to celebrate a midnight countdown into the new year. However, this did not prevent some business owners from celebrating a New Year's moment, even if it was earlier or smaller than in previous years.

Our colleagues from RTL went to Luxembourg City on New Year's Eve to get some impressions from local businesses. Restaurant Owner Claude Colbach noted that due to the coronavirus restrictions, they only welcomed about 50 guests for dinner instead of their usual 300.

When it comes to the traditional New Year's countdown, some establishments decided to still go ahead with it, but advance it to Moscow time. That way, they were able to commemorate the beginning of the new year without breaking the 11.00 p.m. closing time.

In terms of positives, businesses were able to close up shop before midnight and give their employees an early night off to celebrate the remainder of New Year's Eve. Despite the closing hour, the bells of the Luxembourg City cathedral announced the beginning of 2022 on time at midnight on Friday.
