
Dr Dentzer underlined that the country has registered record-breaking infection numbers over the past couple of days and that further spikes are to be expected. At the time of the live stream, authorities had already recorded about 800 new infections for the day, but were still counting.
The virologist from the Health Directorate also stressed the efficiency of the vaccines and booster jabs, especially in light of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. He estimates that at the moment, about 40 to 50% of new cases are caused by Omicron.
Although the Health Directorate has yet to approve the third shot for people under the age of 18, the virologist expressed certainty that this will happen soon. At the moment, the booster campaign is also facing logistical problems due to delivery shortages, Dr Dentzer admitted.
