The council had contracted the firm two years ago to patrol the Parc Gerlache in central Differdange because people were feeling unsafe.
As the Tageblatt reported Wednesday morning, the contract runs out at the end of the year and will not be renewed. The plan is to have more police patrol the area and improve lighting in and around the park. The council does not rule out potentially employing a security company again in the future, however.
The case of Differdange, run by a green mayor, had been cited a few times by Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer in the discussion of the security companies in the Gare quarter, a decision that had been heavily criticised by the opposition and green police minister Henri Kox. Only police should be patrolling public areas, was their argument. The contract in Luxembourg City ran out in mid-November and has also not been renewed.
