A man has died following a violent altercation in Esch-sur-Alzette on Saturday afternoon, Luxembourg’s public prosecutor’s office confirmed on Sunday.

Police were initially called to Rue de Mâcon shortly after 1pm following reports of a dispute between two individuals. When officers from the Grand Ducal Police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man lying unconscious on the ground. A suspect was apprehended at the scene and arrested on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office, while the criminal investigation department launched an inquiry.

According to the Luxembourg prosecutor’s office, the victim, a 54-year-old man, is believed to have sustained injuries from a "bladed weapon" during the altercation. Police officers immediately began resuscitation efforts until emergency medical services arrived. Despite these attempts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, a 42-year-old man, is believed to have been involved in the incident. Given the seriousness of the case, the duty prosecutor and the investigating judge attended the scene to carry out initial findings and determine the next steps in the investigation.

Specialists from the Judicial Police’s technical unit and the homicide section carried out forensic examinations at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death. The suspect was presented before an investigating judge on Sunday morning and was subsequently placed in pre-trial detention.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities stating that further investigative steps are necessary to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. The prosecutor’s office also reiterated that the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
