In 2025, 224,826 visitors were recorded and 663 events organised, from international concerts to workshops and conferences. With these figures, the Philharmonie is now reaching the limits of its infrastructure. Many events sell out quickly, logistics are being pushed to their limits, and workshops, backstage areas, and internal facilities such as the cafeteria and restaurant are no longer suited to the demands of daily operations.

The trend of recent years shows a clear picture: twenty years after the building first opened, its capacity is no longer sufficient to fulfil its cultural mission and meet the expectations of its audience. To accommodate this dynamic growth, an extension is now being built that will seamlessly integrate into the existing building both functionally and visually.

The centrepiece of the extension is a new multipurpose hall that can be used flexibly for educational programmes, workshops, receptions, and professional events. In addition, the restaurant is being enlarged, and the internal infrastructure reorganised to meet the growing need for space and improved logistics.

Work has been underway for around a year and a half, presenting a technical challenge, as the Philharmonie remains fully operational throughout the construction period. Noisier work is scheduled around concert times to avoid disruption.

The opening of the extension is planned for the end of 2027, providing the Philharmonie with the necessary capacity to remain a cultural landmark for Luxembourg well into the future.

The project, commissioned by the Public Building Administration, is being carried out by Bureau 2Portzamparc and CBA – Christian Bauer & Associés Architectes.
